Bentonville Bike Testing: A Two-Week Challenge
Our two-week adventure in Bentonville came to a close, and we were eager to wrap up our testing of some of the world's most exciting bicycles. After completing challenges, putting miles on each bike, and fine-tuning our performance, there were only two items left on our checklist.
The Challenge: A Two-Week Bike Test
Our objective was to thoroughly test and review a range of road bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrid bicycles. We wanted to push each bike to its limits, testing its performance in various conditions and scenarios. From grueling climbs to technical descents, we rode our way through the Ozark Mountains, putting each bike through its paces.
Bike Selection
We had an impressive lineup of bikes to test, featuring a mix of high-performance road bikes, aggressive mountain bikes, and versatile hybrid models. Our selection included top brands such as Trek, Specialized, Santa Cruz, and Cannondale, among others.
Testing Protocols
To ensure a fair and comprehensive assessment, we adopted a structured testing protocol for each bike. We evaluated factors such as:
- Handling and control: How responsive was the bike to steering inputs? Did it exhibit any quirks or tendencies?
- Comfort and ergonomics: Was the saddle comfortable for extended periods of riding? Were the handlebars positioned optimally for different rider positions?
- Performance: How did the bike perform on climbs, descents, and flat sections of road? What were its strengths and weaknesses in terms of acceleration, braking, and cornering?
- Weight and efficiency: Was the bike adequately weighted to provide a responsive ride without being overly sensitive or twitchy?
The Results
After two weeks of testing, we had compiled a wealth of data and impressions about each bike. We were impressed by the performance and handling of many bikes, but some stood out for their exceptional quality and features.
Some key findings from our test include:
- Top performers: The Trek Fuel EX 9.8 and Specialized Stumpjumper ST expertly navigated technical trails, while the Cannondale Topstone 6 with its SRAM GRX groupset proved to be a versatile road bike.
- Hidden gems: We discovered that the Santa Cruz Hightower and the Diamondback Response were capable mountain bikes with impressive capabilities for their price points.
